How to Improve «Inline Multiscale Image Replacement»?
A couple of weeks ago I've published a new technique on how to improve the publication of high-resolution images on the web:
http://gasi.ch/blog/inline-multiscale...
As I stated in my article, this was my first iteration on this technique.
A couple of people have justifiably argued that the method is too invisible for users. I agree and I would like to improve the visibility of zoomable images.
Now I'd like to gather some ideas on what's the best way to indicate zoomable images in a site!
Please post your suggestions below.

Inappropriate?Good question. We do this with the initial "bounce" in the Seadragon Ajax embed, as well as the presence of the buttons. The animation from coarse to fine resolution also helps to indicate (although in the replacement case you don't really want to go from sharp to coarse and back to sharp). We've also been kicking around the idea of a special cursor, but of course that depends on you moving your mouse over the image.
At any rate, this topic seems like a good addition to the Zooming Design Patters:

Something like "Indicating zooming is possible"
I’m glad we're discussing these things

Inappropriate? What about using something like "Ken Burns Effect" ? Not only it looks great, but would immediately draw user to image to explore it. Once mouseover...something must trigger user to play with image... for example image following mouse pointer slowly while its mouseover ?

Inappropriate?Saša,
I really like your Ken Burns Effect idea.
This would require a bit of thinking on how to describe the animation in terms of metadata for the image viewer.

I’m thankful
