Bad Performance in «Transparent» WMode
Can I improve openzoom's performance when wmode is set to "transparent"?
Whenever I set the wmode to be transparent, I suffer some pretty bad performance degredation in Openzoom in Firefox. Is there any way to get around this, or is this inevitable due to the way Openzoom works?

Inappropriate?Peter,
Frankly, I've never worked with wmode = transparent but considering that OpenZoom is pushing against the limits of the Flash Player I can imagine this to cause issues.
What's the specific reason for using the transparent wmode?
The rendering engine of OpenZoom was basically replaced around last May.
Therefore, have you made any performance tests with the old versions?
UPDATE: Flash Player engineer Tinic Uro says:
DO NOT USE WMODE UNLESS YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED TRANSPARENCY! I can't stress that enough. Given the architecture of plugins there is no way for the Flash Player to know if Flash content is on a hidden tab or not and disable rendering properly. If you use WMODE the Flash Player will continue to suck up CPU cycles as if the tab was visible. In addition WMODE is much slower than the normal mode.

There you have it.

Inappropriate?Daniel,
The reason for using transparent wmode is so that way I can "float" a comment box above the flashpiece, so the users can view the zoomed image and then post comments on it.
I'm aware that wmode is pretty CPU-intensive, and I'm afraid that's exactly what's happening here. I think I might have to look for an alternative solution, like making the zoom box smaller and putting the comments to the right of it. it's not exactly what I wanted but we make do with what we have.
Openzoom itself is great, so we're going to stick with it.
Cheers,
Peter
I’m content.

Inappropriate?Peter,
Your workaround seems reasonable and I'm glad you like OpenZoom.
Please post a link once your project is ready!
Cheers,
Daniel
